What Inspired Me to Write

Some stories are written from imagination. Others are written because they refuse to remain silent.

For many years, I carried fragments of memories that never truly left me. My childhood in Aleppo, the pain of leaving home, the uncertainty of beginning again in a foreign land, and the long journey of building a new life in Canada. These memories were never simply events from my past; they became questions about identity, belonging, resilience, and what it truly means to find a home.

The Geography of Exile was born from those questions. Although the novel is a work of fiction inspired by true events, its emotional foundation is deeply personal. I did not want to write only about my own journey. I wanted to tell a story that belongs to millions of people who have crossed borders, left loved ones behind, faced uncertainty, and discovered that exile is not merely the distance between two countries—it is the distance between who we once were and who we are forced to become.

The Journey of Identity

Throughout my life, I have lived many different chapters. I was born in Syria, witnessed political upheaval, experienced immigration, served in the Canadian Armed Forces, and later became a professor and educator. Each stage of that journey taught me that every immigrant carries two histories: the one left behind and the one still being written. This book is my attempt to honour those untold stories.

The Strength of Ordinary People

It is a tribute to courage, perseverance, and the quiet strength of ordinary people who rebuild their lives despite loss and uncertainty. Above all, it is a reminder that while geography may separate us from our homeland, hope has the power to lead us home in unexpected ways.

Finding Home in Exile

I hope readers will see parts of their own journey in these pages. Whether they have crossed oceans, overcome hardship, or simply searched for where they belong, I hope they discover that the human spirit is stronger than any border.

The Power of Stories

Stories have a unique ability to connect us. They weave threads of shared experiences, allowing us to see reflections of ourselves in others. When we share our narratives, we create a tapestry of understanding. This connection fosters empathy and compassion, bridging the gaps between different cultures and histories.

Embracing Resilience

Resilience is a theme that resonates deeply in my writing. It is the quiet strength that emerges in moments of adversity. Each character in The Geography of Exile embodies this resilience. They face challenges head-on, drawing from their inner wells of courage. This journey is not just about survival; it is about thriving in the face of uncertainty.

The Role of Memory

Memory plays a crucial role in shaping our identities. It is a powerful force that can both anchor us and propel us forward. In my novel, memory serves as a guiding light for the characters. It reminds them of their roots while encouraging them to forge new paths. The interplay between past and present creates a rich tapestry of experiences that resonate with readers.

A Call to Reflection

As you read The Geography of Exile, I invite you to reflect on your own journey. What stories have shaped you? How have your experiences influenced your sense of self? Each of us carries a unique narrative, and in sharing these stories, we find common ground.

Conclusion: A Shared Humanity

In conclusion, The Geography of Exile is more than just a novel; it is a celebration of shared humanity. It invites readers to explore the complexities of identity, belonging, and resilience. I hope it inspires you to embrace your own story and recognize the strength that lies within.

Let us remember that while we may be separated by geography, we are united by our shared experiences and the universal quest for belonging. Together, we can build bridges of understanding and compassion, creating a world where every story is valued and heard.

I look forward to sharing this journey with you.
